Which dive torch?
« on: March 17, 2005, 09:16:48 PM »
Why are most of the canister torches you see(like on the net)        10w and 21w, why aren't they bigger like 50w or 100w?

I know it would reduce the burn-time but wouldn't be they be brighter if they were bigger watt?

I was thinking about one but im not sure whats the story with them, what do ye make of the Dive-Rite ones?

 Nice One

Hi

I'm looking into buying a new torch seeing that my old on finally gave up the ghost last weekend. I'm looking for a good Umbilical Torch. Does any one have any advice on what make to look at and what no too look at?

Ian, a 10w HID is as bright as a 50w halogen, a 21w HID is as bright as a 100w halogen and the light is white as opposed to yellow. The bigger wattage HIDS are used mainly for video work. I use dual 24 w HID reflectors. + the bigger lights are €€€€€€€€€€€€€€€ :D

Hi Barry,

I have a 10w Custom Divers HID umbilical and I've found it works well.  If you're after something a little more serious then take a look at http://www.divingniknaks.com for the salvo torches from the US.  These are from the guy that invented the Halcyon torches but have now set-up on his own.  Rumour has it that they are **** hot (technical term you understand .;) )

Barry,
What sort of budget are you thinking about?
That will more or less decide what to go for.
I was in Tom Snowdons shop in Belfast at the weekend and he has a few of the Metalsub umbilicals in stock in both HID and 50watt, I have a 50 watt that is currently in need of repair but I would strongly recommend them for being 'solid' and the fact it has a dimmer adjustable head.
A very good torch I have seen a bit lately is the Greenforce umbilical and they have a huge selection in both price and types look at

http://www.lumbbros.com/

There is also a basic 50 watt rugged enough umbilical for about 140 stg from

will post the link as soon as I can find it??

Talk to you soon.

Hi,

I'm thinking of buying an umbilical torch. I'd just like to find out what kind of experiences people have had with the Solas torch so far?

I'd also be interested in finding out which torch seems to work best for diving off ireland. The Solas500 or the Solas1000?

Thanks,
Barry

I was lucky enough to get a first hand demo at the NEC last year by Kevin and it really was impressive. Compared to other torchs I looked at its one of the best I saw.

It got a very good right up in this months Dive mag.

Barry,
I am diving with a SOLUS 1000 and it is the brightest torch I have seen out there by far.
I have also used the SOLUS 500 and it is a very solid piece of kit and practically unbreakable, with a very good beam for wreck diving.
As with all things it comes down to cost and the 1000 cost's more than the 500 I will give you a loan of a SOLUS 500 to use this weekend and you can compare it on the dives with the SOLUS 1000 I am using.

Regards
