Cave near Water Rock House, Midleton
« on: February 20, 2010, 06:53:43 PM »
I decided to take Richie up on his offer of a cave in middleton. I arrived today and was excited at what i saw. After looking around and talking to the owner Denis, I decided to put on drusuiy go in for a quick look without the heavy gear. I left Richie and Denis at the entrance looking on with interest at what was in there. I slid into the cave and it was a about 4 feet high 3 feet wide. There was surface water running in but it was only about a foot deep. I pushed my way in along the floor which was made up of twigs leaves all kinda debris and mud. I moved along slowly as there was lots sharp edges and I did not want tear the drysuit this early on. The cave was mainly going in straight line for about 50 meters towards the main road where the guys had said. I got to a blockage, and could not go any further as there was a car wheel, milk crate and tons boards and branches blocking the way on. I pulled out a milk crate and decided to take it out. I slowly pushed it to the exit and then switched torches to have my hands free to dig.

I returned to the blockage and began diggging, eventually it cleared and I moved the wheel and could crawl over the pill of branches and into a wider section. The water had dissapeared under the left hand wall by the blockage. I moved around and found 2 soccer balls and lots of boards. There was a dry mud cave very small to the right so i put all the drbris in there to give me more room. I could hear the water and see it but the cave had narrowed up so much i could not even get my hand through. The wider section at the end had alot of small stones so maybe some digging in the future may increase the size and I may be able to push futher on, but it looks very low and not sure a person could fit but we will see. I plan to return with a small shovel to see if this is the case soon.

Good job BoB!!

It sounds to me like it's worth of digging, could be a nice few hundred meters through trip, maybe even some sump. Once cleared, some sort of grill bar could be installed at the sink to trap all the flood debris and prevent any future blockage. You should get few divers, lure them with he tpromises of Florida like cavern diving and make them help you to clear it ;)  That's what I usually do  :demon:
