Go Pro Cameras...
« on: January 04, 2011, 07:19:33 PM »
Sorry for resurrecting v old topic but I saw this online today:

http://www.goprocamera.com/products/hd-helmet-hero-camera.php

Only waterproof to 60m (only!) but significantly cheaper than Vee-cam? (not sure what their latest prices are).

Seen a kayaker with one of these down at the Bridges of Ross at the weekend. Look like a nice piece of kit and may even make the "the list" of gear I have to buy  :sarcasm: Has anyone seen any dive footage taken with one?

Brought it twice to 80-82m (just can't remember, it was soo dark.. ;) ) and it worked fine. Bear in mind though you'll need a plenty of light for GoPRo, very poor performance in the low light conditions...:(

Hi,

Thanks for that. I have dropped the camera idea. Everyone else seems to have one now - so no point us all taking the same pics !!!

Anyway, between all the scooters and cameras next year, it will be like diving with the French Paparazzi on scooters!!!!

Regards,
Fintan.

All I know is that you need to have a flat port (can be bought as an extra) to correct the focus blur that happens when the camera is used underwater. I'm also looking to buy some sort of cheapo underwater video, either the gopro hd or perhaps a ixus 115 with an ikelite housing (good to 60m like the gopro).

Gopro is probably better for mounting onto a helmet though.

Wow that makes a huge difference actually. I'd noticed a lot of underwater GoPro footage was very soft, nice comparrison here with and without the flat lens - video after 4mins is with flat lens...much sharper.

I have a mate that has used one for surfing and cant fault it. Im looking into getting one too and there seems to be a few options for underwater housings.
This link is the company who offer the housing and correction flat lens. http://www.eyeofmine.com/gopro/underwater/index.html

Yeah, that'd be my worry here. All the videos are with the sun overhead. Like 5m deep with 40m viz or something, or out of the water.

Off the Mugglins?
Or at 30m (never mind 60)?

Also it's fixed focus, you won't get any sharp close-up (not that you can frame the shot, anyway, no screen). That's just not the point of these cameras. But for 300 euro, maybe worth considering. I mean you can get a camera and housing for that price.

Joe, make sure you post us a video here, I'm quite interested.

Hey all, there is a new GoPro camera coming out shortly and the current HD and 960 are due to drop a lot in price so don't go splurging just yet.

Hi Martin, all the GoPro waterproof housings go to 60m. The new camera has some extra features, slo-mo, better res on pictures (11mp up from 5mp) and a few other changes. Not sure if the new one has the flat port to fix the focus underwater but it is available aftersales anyway. Best news is that the old HD camera will drop loads in price which makes it a better buy imho.
