Too right Matthieu, sorry about that crap!!

The easy situation is if you are in mid water, drifting with the tide. The Hoola Hoop or the clipped/deflated SMB both work well.
By the way, wisdom has it that you should always endeavour to get back to the shot as it has safety in numbers (of bail-out cylinders). However, if you are at 100m ish or deeper and are say 25m from the shot, you could use all your LHS trimix just to get back to the shot on OC - (Having/grabbing a buddy here would be a distincy advantage and double your gas availability) In this case, the idea is to 'jump' up 30m, then stop / slow the ascent. This allows you to start offgassing and to deploy the yellow smb. It also makes the LHS last longer AND allows you to use your RHS if needed.

The shot is the best place to be for sure, however it has snagging possibilities. The important point is that the skipper can only have one set of procedures for that group. To suit all scenarios, we tell the skipper to drop the deep set first (he can control the boat and launch the drop set from the same position) and clip the carabener to the loop 'positively' onto the smb's strap, collapse it and deploy.

Iv heard before that climbers have to destroy their used rope to prevent it being used again. Maybe its an old wives tale, maybe not!

All of this makes some interesting reading. Would love to get in on the topic but I think I would be way out of my depth.  :sarcasm:

on the climbing rope, you can get good rope on ebay for about 10£ per 100ft , this rope is rated for tree surgeons but not full climbing rope , 10mm thick. i have a friend who  bought a large amount of climbing rope some yrs back for very little money i will ask and see if there's more available.
regards!

Yeah the difference is that climbers use dynamic rope. It has about a 10% stretch in it and has very fancy woven sheath and inner core. Far too good and expensive to be throwing on the sea. However once its past its best by date then a great option. I have 3 x 60m lengths of climbing rope at home all kinda getting on at this stage :-)

On the other hand cavers use static line which doesn't stretch and is handy for abseiling and a lot cheaper per metre than dynamic rope. I'd say that's the rope in the post above
