Cavern Training?
« on: December 22, 2011, 09:01:17 PM »
Hi Lads

I have been thinking about getting some cave training for a long time now so want to know where in ireland i could do the cavern course?

I know martyn farr runs courses here but would need a 3 or 4 to make it work. This would be a great option if there was a few interested?

So any thoughts or suggestions?

Martyn Farr runs cavern or intro courses in Ireland if there's numbers to make the trip over worthwhile.  Don't think he's been over for the last couple of years.  Doolin is the best place for cavern but it's next to impossible to plan a weekend down there weather wise.   Martyn is based in Llangattock in south wales with access to a good variety of training caves / mines.  If you can sort out cheap flights to Bristol, it's only a hour and half drive to his place.

Matt:   There's no such thing as "cavern" in Ireland / UK   :)   Cavern strictly refers to diving within the cavern zone of a cave, which is the section that natural ambient light reaches.  The cavern zone in most irish caves is probably 2m.   Even in doolin with great vis, you're doing well to have ambient light beyond 15m

hi there,

i looked into doing mine in ireland or the uk last year but without a group in just dont work. i went to protech in sardinia last june and did cavern and intro to cave. they are very good and give real very very tough training. although cavern is a 2 day course it usually takes 4 with them as they treat it as the course before they take you in a cave(if you know what i mean). alot of the european cave divers train there as the reputation is very high. i ended up spending 10 days there and was knackered at the end of it but the training is excellent. all the best,
andrew

As Matt has stated I have done the cavern instructor course. I am not sure whether I will be teaching cavern here for a while. Conditions are rairly good and planning can be at the last minute. I will be away in Florida teaching May, June July of this year but I may be able schedule a cavern class for end August/September. It all depends on the weather and numbers looking to complete the course. I can leave the month of september free and maybe we can organise something.

To make it worth while I would need 2-3 people. I would like to train people in sidemount but backmount is an option as well. If people are interested let me know. I may even have a friend who is a very experiened instructor here on holidays who can help or train you individually. Let me know who is interested and I can see what i can do.
