2nd hand compressor
« on: January 01, 2012, 04:08:26 PM »
I'm looking at getting a second hand electric motor driven compresor ideally a Bauer. I am a relative novice with compressors, I've done the familiarisation course through CFT in the leading diver thats about it. I'm trying to work out how do you establish whether a compressor is in good condition or is knackered? Are there any parts of the compressor that I should examine carefully or is just seeing it running a good indicator of it being in good order?

How much are you thinking about spending Cathal?? Bauer do a small electric PE100 compressor that was on offer at LIDS last year for about 1500 sterling.

Not sure this if this is the one your on about,  the price is approx €2200 for the electric single phase: shipping not included though. According to the fill rate (100lpm) your talking about 50 mins minimum to fill twin 12L's, although I would not mind that as I would be filling from the comfort of my own shed.
Have you heard anything good bad or indiffernt about them??

seems the same, 2200 probably ball park, I think the RRP was in the region of 1800 sterling with a few hundred off for the show. They would have held the price for a few weeks if I had put the order in so I'll see what is up at LIDS this March and give you a buzz if there are any offers about.

Shouldn't you be knee deep in pampers by now.... ;)

All the best for 2012!

correction here is the link http://mavotec.eu/index.php?cat=c61_-PE-100.html and the price is more like €2374 which would be a good bit past my price range.

Yep, same one, if they do an offer again the price should be nearer 1800 euro. I'm giving serious thought to it as well. Fill rate is slow but for personal use its perfect and just what you want with topping up high O2 cylinders anyway. Add a small generator and you have a great setup for remote areas as well. Small little unit, fits in the boot with room to spare.

FYI the pampers are up to the ceilling here and there's about another 2 days or so to go :sarcasm: :sarcasm:. Let us know if they are doing a deal at LIDS2012, I like the idea of the generator especially if you could fit the J of O2 in the car as well!!

Guys a small generator will not work with Hp compressors.  You need a f---k of size to get the thing started. The min requirment is about 8kw.  There is a start up surge of about 55amp I think.

So for remote location petrol is the way to go.

55 amps at 230 V AC? Bit of a surge, that's more power than to start a car, by an order of magnitude.

Cheers,

Actually, 50-70 amps is about right (12v for a car) and a rough average for most portable compressors. The impression I got from Bauer (email sent to double check-I'll post reply) is that the PE100 can work off a portable generator. Its single phase, AC 2.2Kw, works at home off a 13amp plug socket (most plug circuits have a max load of about 3Kw) so should be ok.

Would nice to see there reply,

The little coltri also 2.2kw has a surge of 42amp , the smallest generator they recommend is 4kva with no pressure.

But be very careful if the generator is under powered it will burn out your motor.

Just looking over some old stuff I have here, the Bauer seems to have a 90 amp surge with run rated fuse of 17 amp.  I recon 8kva needed unless there is some expensive soft start system fitted.  But I may have to eat my hat.

Hehe, I think I'll be doing the same!  Did a quick check on the prices of portable generators. Lets just say renting for a few days is a better option. Feckin things cost more than the petrol compressor!  :cuckoo:

I'd rather buy a couple more cylinders and keep the electric unit at home.

Why electric and not petrol engine?
Seems a waste to buy and electric compressor only to have to buy a petrol generator to supply the electricity to power it!?
