That's great customer service from DiveLife (as ever) right there. Fair play to Brett.

Its probably a very fair result. I've never seen anything like that happen before. I religiously wash my gear after a days diving or when I get back from a weekend but that does not take account for the week or 10 day long trips we do up on Rosguill where the cylinders live under your bench spot and get immersed in salt water every day, get covered by spray and water when the deck is awash while we're under way etc. Ditto our drop cylinders living in their crates for the duration. There's all sorts of metal doo-dahs touching the cylinders while stowed before and after the dives and the only fresh water that gets at them is what falls out of the sky. I wouldn't think twice about that either now, in the past or in future.

There's definitely an element of "freak occurence" about this episode Paul

Mind you the reason I know a little about electrolysis is that I bought a handheld Solus torch a few years back and after one weekend in St Johns Point the whole housing was covered with those pits. I swapped it for another and it still occured initially but not nearly as bad and I still use it and its grand. For the record it wasn't on a metal clip or anything like that - I used a cord lanyard.

Agreed, I am thinking it is a once off or possibly a bad batch at the worst case.
Time will tell regarding the rest of the cylinders.

Everyone has to accept that things can be faulty or give problems they are not supposed to.
When this does happen, it is up to the supplier or distributor to resolve the issue.  A reply withing 24 hours from Brett and a second reply within the following 12 letting me know that the cylinder will be replaced is more than adequate!

Massive thumbs up for Divelife and Both Brett and Adam.  :rocker:

Still delighted with my purchase and the decision to have ordered the cylinders from them.

Paul.

Cylinders returned to Divelife and they have to wait until Luxfer inspect them and that if they deem it to be "Galvanic Corrosion" then they will not replace them!

So all I can do is wait but in fairness.. what else could it be! It is Galvanic corrosion but there was and is no contact between the 2 different metals except for the salt water bridging the gap.

The correct stage strap was used with the correct rubber. Even the cylinders that were religously rinsed have shown the very early stages of corrosion.

Annoyed now as I fear this is going to get messy. Luxfer's 15 year warranty may not be so true.

One word. BALLS.

Just an update to this post.

We received 2 new cylinders from Divelife. If it wasn't for Brett I doubt we would have so thanks Brett!

Basically, even though we did everything correctly as it says on the tin so to say, because of the damage to the cylinders, Luxfer were saying it was dissimilar metal corrosion from the incorrect fitting of the stage strap and/or not rinsing and they would not be liable. How could we prove we did everything correctly! (How could they prove we didnt)

Lads, I can assure you there was no contact between the two metals. Even using the jubilee rubber, it was clear to see the pitting on the edge of the rubber.
So for those of you who do not rinse your bottles, I don't know how you get away with it!
I realise that there had to be contact for it to happen but this could only have been from the water droplets after use that was making contact from the stainless jubilee clip, over the rubber and onto the cylinder.

Maybe it was a freak once off case (with 2 different bottles owned by two different people) but there is a lesson in there somewhere!

Please check your tanks if they are of the unpainted/coated kind..
