Irish Shipwrecks Database
« on: February 06, 2012, 03:57:48 PM »
I had a grand chat with Mick O'Rourke from Co. Clare after the INFOMAR talk last Thursday.

Mick runs a website called Irish Shipwrecks which is a very valuable source of information for Maritime Researchers and Wreck Divers with information on Shipwrecks in Irish Coastal Waters. Irish Shipwrecks is a searchable database of wrecks from 2 World Wars, Ocean Liners and numerous casualties from 1750 onwards.

Anyone have any good links for Spanish Armada wrecks? Particularly the Falco Blanco Mediano.

Dec, talk to the underwater archaeology unit. They'll be able to tell you more and you might get some info that is not necessarily going to appear in print.....  ;)

I've been reading up on them. A few up north but seems there very heavily protected and apparently they have never given a permit to the ones I checked out.
As far as I know the only dives done were to salvage and there is little or nothing left. I'm referring to 2/3 wrecks only. There are a few off clare and Galway but I can't find info only general marks but no co-ordinates......

The wrecks they have located and dived are protected, but if you apply with acceptable reasons to dive you would probably get a permit (depending on their future plans for the site). There are some they know of only by general location - they have not been found. They would automatically be protected but would not need a permit as such as they don't know where they are exactly. It would be of more benefit for the wrecks to be located by concerned divers and notified to the unit (good thing) rather than being stumbled upon by smidge hunters (not a good thing). That said, not an easy task even if you know exactly where the wreck is located.

Tad "who you know" not "what you know"....... :sarcasm:

Ha-ha-Hanniffy  ;D

I already know the location of the only beach down there with an armada anchor off it (and I've seen it!) FYI my clan are all Cloonans, going back centuries in that neck of the woods. Local knowledge boyo.  :P

For every thing else ,  there is Master Card ,.

History says there were three in Clare one between Seafield and Mutton Island one at Doonbeg and one burnt out in the Shannon. This is my neck of the woods and I can tell you a lot of searching has gone on over the years nothing has ever been found.  At this point if you found anything it would only be a wreck site, structures are long gone. Back in the 80s members of the Ennis Club working with the Archeology dept were actively searching for ancient wrecks around Mutton Island, no trace of the San Marcus or any other Armada vessel was uncovered,  but they did find the wrecksite of the HMS Martin http://www.irishshipwrecks.com/shipwrecks.php?wreck_ref=117  .
