Would be handy having a caving section on Tecdiver? I know Barry had said before that wouldnt be a problem, although I will checkout cavediver.net too.

Hi Artur,

Nice bit of info there but do tell me, what mine in Cork did you dive ??? I'm based in Cork and would love to go for a look :)

Richie.

Hi Richie,
Gortavallig near Kilcrohane. Ok, that's the tough one. Don't take twinset there, not that you wouldnt fit, it's just damn tough trek to get there unless you have private chopter (or actually boat would be better idea). Take 7s, at the end you will regret that you didnt take your argon bottle:D . Have a rope for safe ascent to the deep adit - all workings below that are flooded - and camera as copper oxidations are beautiful. Let me know if you need more details.  But since you are based in Cork...On Saturday 2nd of FEB I'll be searching for some reportedly flooded mines near Glendore ( but it's not  Glendore mine) Maybe you might be interested?:)

Sorry guys I'm a bit late getting back to this.. When I was talking about dir style I was getting at team protocols mainly.. It would be difficult for any team to work together efficiently in Irish caves. Simply put your far safer solo diving. I was not getting so much at a back mounted configuration. Although I have used my rebreather(few scratches to prove it) here caving I still think that a side mount config is far more versatile all-rounder for Ireland giving ease of setup, transport, redundancy options etc.. Its far easier to feather a valve open and closed that is close to your chest than behind your head while trying to maintain good trim and exit.. But of course there is more than one way to skin a cat and whatever works for someone works!

Artur raises some great points.. Ireland is indeed a mecca for any cave diver with the determination and resolve for exploration. Congrats on the connection in Doolin.. The Hell Complex is certainly one of the more accessible back mounted sites.. Although you must be very careful while diving here as sea caves have their own challenges associated with them. I look forward to Jim getting back in the water and heading back to Pollloughabo with him. More on the mines... Is Noxom not in the UK somewhere Artur?? Have you dived a mine in Ireland with that sort of viz? I've no mine diving experience at all.

It is clear that in the last couple of years cave diving seems to be moving forward here in Ireland. We should all make the effort this season to meet share ideas, dives, thoughts, drink or whatever.. As Jim said there is an Irish Cave Diving Forum on cavediver.net that is just getting going..

Getting people together is usually very difficult but I wouldn't mind booking my time for some nice diving in one of the mines that have been mentioned here. Can we meet guys and discuss it further?

If we send our email addresses and contact numbers, and create a mail group, we could arrange to hookup maybe near an area we could dive in?  I would be on for a weekend soon, meet on a Saturday and and get to know what the other is diving with and possible new dive sites?
Cheers,

Why not just do it on this forum. I'm not a cave diver but at least I'll know where to look if and when.

What about side mounting the 3 litres off the RB?? Not sure where you'd mount the scrubber then (keep it clean....).

The rEvo design is nice and flat for backmounting and caves, Im a "robust" chap so for my dimensions sides are the only way, you could wear a top hat and have the scrubber in there, like Abraham Lincoin?

Hi Mark,
Sorry for late response, I was on the West Coast for couple of days. You're right Mark, Noxon Park Mine is in Forest of Dean, England. To date I haven't found anything similar in Ireland in terms of visibility but you never know - I don't give up, on Saturday I'm checking out one place in Cork with reportedly 'crystal clear water and flooded passages'...will see :D
Maybe this time it will turn out to be our 'perfect mine'...There always seems to be something - Coughlan has deep stable and long levels but disappointing visibility - 1-2m in peaty water; workings in Glendasan (Wicklow) have crystal clear water but we're concerned about full range exploration as they seem to be quite unstable; Knockmahon in Waterford has  a huge potential ( at least when you look at abandonment plans ) but access is really difficult... (first picture below). However there's always some reward...one way or another:
picture no 2 -underwater copper stalactite in Knockmahon; picture no 3 - Cathedral Cavern in Coughlan mine.

There is an irish section of the american cave diving forum. http://www.cavediver.net
anyone can have access if they e-mail me as i know the administrators and i am a moderator myself. It would be good to get irish cave divers talking to each other that way we can give new ideas and maybe expole new caves. I been cave diving for 3 years but obly found out last year that there was even caves to dive over here. So maybe more talking will let to better dives and we might not have to travel so far to find good caves.

Why the closed forum? - is it danger of folk ill prepared getting ideas, access issues to the entry/exit points i.e. landowner issues, not having eejits named Gian hijacking the topics or is it just a closed club....or all of the above? :D
